Ingredients
For the cabbage rolls:
1 large head of cabbage
1 lb (450g) ground beef
1 cup cooked rice
1 onion, finely chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 egg
1/4 cup breadcrumbs
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 teaspoon paprika
1/4 teaspoon dried thyme
1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
1/4 teaspoon dried basil
For the tomato sauce:
2 cups tomato sauce
1 cup beef or vegetable broth
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon paprika
Salt and pepper to taste
This recipe typically makes about 8-10 cabbage rolls, depending on the size of the cabbage leaves and the amount of filling used. Adjust the quantities as needed to suit your preferences.
Directions
Start by preparing the cabbage. Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Carefully remove any damaged outer leaves from the cabbage and cut out the core. Place the whole cabbage in the boiling water and let it cook for about 5-7 minutes, or until the outer leaves are tender and can be easily removed. Remove the cabbage from the water and let it cool slightly.
While the cabbage is cooling, prepare the filling. In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, cooked rice, chopped onion, minced garlic, egg, breadcrumbs, salt, pepper, paprika, thyme, oregano, and basil. Mix well until all the ingredients are evenly incorporated.
Once the cabbage is cool enough to handle, carefully peel off the softened outer leaves. Trim the thick center vein from each leaf to make it easier to roll.
Take a cabbage leaf and place a spoonful of the filling mixture in the center. Fold the sides of the leaf over the filling, then roll it up tightly to form a cabbage roll. Repeat with the remaining cabbage leaves and filling mixture.
Top with fried onions and bake for 5 minutes more.
In a separate bowl, mix the tomato sauce, beef or vegetable broth, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, paprika, salt, and pepper to make the sauce.
Pour the tomato sauce mixture over the cabbage rolls, making sure they are evenly coated.
Cover the skillet or baking dish with a lid or aluminum foil.
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
Bake the cabbage rolls in the preheated oven for 1 to 1 1/2 hours, or until the cabbage is tender and the filling is cooked through.
Once the cabbage rolls are cooked, remove them from the oven.
Serve the Homemade Stuffed Cabbage Rolls hot, garnished with chopped fresh parsley if desired.
